The best baby hooded towel sets

Most baby hooded towels are too small after 6 months. Here are the five that grow with your baby and stay soft after 50 washes.

TL;DR The best baby hooded towels are 100% cotton, at least 30x30 inches (so they fit a 1-year-old, not just a newborn), and certified OEKO-TEX or GOTS for safe dyes. Burt's Bees, Pottery Barn Kids, Hudson Baby, Aden + Anais, and the Bamboo Little are our five picks. Sets of 2 to 4 are the sweet spot. Skip the cute novelty character towels — they shrink and fade.

What makes a good baby hooded towel

Most baby towels are sold at 24x24 inches and labeled "0 to 12 months." In practice, they barely cover a 4 month old. The right baby towel is at least 30x30 inches so it can wrap your baby fully from age 0 to about 18 months.

What else matters:

  • 100% cotton or bamboo terry. Soft, absorbent, breathable. Skip microfiber for baby skin.
  • OEKO-TEX or GOTS certified. Verifies the dyes and processing are free of harmful residues.
  • True terrycloth, not flat weave. Terrycloth absorbs 3 to 5x more water than flat-weave waffle towels.
  • Functional hood. The hood should reach over the baby's head, not be a tiny decorative triangle.
  • Reinforced stitching. Cheap towels unravel at the corners within 10 washes.

The five sets we tested

1. Burt's Bees Organic Cotton Hooded Towel ($25 each)

The all-around favorite. 30x30 inches, GOTS-certified organic cotton, real terrycloth weight. Stays soft after 50+ washes (we counted). Available in multi-packs of 2 or 3.

Worth it for the long life. We have one going into year 3 of regular bath use.

2. Pottery Barn Kids Hooded Towel ($30 to $40 each)

The premium pick. 32x32 inches, plush, heavyweight terrycloth that you can monogram. Holds up over years.

The price is higher, but you get a real adult-weight towel that grows with your baby into the toddler bath years.

3. Hudson Baby Hooded Towel Set ($15 for a 2-pack)

The budget winner. 30x30 inches, soft cotton, comes in nice patterns. Slightly thinner than Burt's Bees but still good quality.

Buy two sets. Always have a dry one ready when the other is in the laundry.

4. Aden + Anais Bamboo Hooded Towel ($35)

The cooling pick. Bamboo terrycloth feels lighter and dries faster than cotton. Excellent for warm climates or babies who get overheated after bath. Sizes run smaller — best for ages 0 to 12 months.

The bamboo is also more antimicrobial, so towels don't get mildewy if left damp.

5. Bamboo Little Hooded Towel Set ($28 for 2)

Direct-to-consumer brand at a fair price. Bamboo viscose terry, soft from day one, large size (32x32). The hood is roomier than most.

A good middle-ground choice between budget and premium.

How many baby towels you actually need

Three to four hooded towels covers an average family.

  • One in regular use.
  • One drying after the last bath.
  • One in the laundry.
  • One spare for sickness, travel, or visitor use.

If you bathe daily, you can rotate three. If you bathe every other day, three is plenty.

How to wash baby towels

  • Wash before first use. Removes manufacturing residues.
  • Use baby detergent or fragrance-free detergent. Sensitive skin reacts to perfumes.
  • Wash with similar colors. Cotton can bleed dye in the first 3 washes.
  • Tumble dry low or hang dry. High heat shrinks cotton.
  • Skip fabric softener. Coats fibers, reduces absorbency.
  • Replace when: they feel scratchy (typically year 2 to 3 of regular use).

Special-use towels worth owning

Beyond your everyday hooded towels:

  • One muslin swaddle blanket. Doubles as a quick-dry towel for the diaper bag.
  • One thick adult towel for the parent who does bath time. Your baby will splash. You will be wetter than them.
  • Two wash cloths for face/body cleanup. Small terry squares. Wash daily.
  • One beach/pool sized towel by age 2. 50x60 inches.

What to skip

  • Character-print towels. Fade in 5 washes. Buy a plain towel and a character-print swimsuit if you need novelty.
  • Microfiber. Holds water great but feels slick on baby skin.
  • Tiny "newborn" sized hooded towels. You will use them for one month. Spend that money on a size up.
  • Velour-finish towels. Look pretty, absorb poorly.
Bath safety reminder. Always lift baby out before reaching for a towel. Never leave a baby in the tub to grab a towel from another room. Drowning can happen in inches of water.

The bottom line

Get two Burt's Bees or Hudson Baby hooded towels in 30x30. Wash them on cold without fabric softener. They will last 2 to 3 years of daily bath use. Skip the novelty prints and tiny "newborn" towels — the right grown-up size is more useful longer.
