City strollers fail in different ways than suburban ones. Plastic wheels disintegrate against the curb at every block. The "compact" model in the showroom won't fit through your apartment door. Anything over 25 lbs becomes a workout up the walkup. And you'll fold and unfold the thing eight times a day getting on and off the train.
Most "best stroller" reviews are written by people who push a stroller around a calm suburb once. The criteria below are what actually matter the day you're carrying a fussy baby, a coffee, and a bag of groceries onto the subway.
The single most predictive feature. You will fold this stroller while holding a screaming baby in the other arm. A two-handed fold means you put the baby down on a public sidewalk, or on the train platform, or you don't fold at all. A one-hand fold keeps everything moving.
"All-terrain" usually means foam-filled plastic. Smooth on flat sidewalks, brutal on curbs and cracked pavement. Real air-filled tires (Bumbleride Indie, Baby Jogger GT2) absorb the bumps. The trade-off is the rare flat. Worth it.
NYC, Boston, and pre-war apartment doorways are often 28 to 30 inches. A standard double stroller is 30 inches. Some single strollers are too wide. Measure your front door before you buy. This is the test that should decide your shortlist, and almost no review will tell you to do it.
Cheap strollers have baskets you can only access from the back. In the city you grab things while you're moving. Side or front access matters more than total volume.

The infant car seat that comes bundled adds 8 to 10 lbs to the stroller, makes the fold bulkier, and locks you into one car seat brand. In the city you barely drive. Buy a stand-alone stroller and a separate car seat for the rare ride.
Jogging strollers are heavier and the fixed front wheel makes city navigation harder. Tight turns are fixed-wheel's worst event. Only worth it if you're genuinely running.
The $80 umbrella stroller looks like a deal. It also breaks within six months of city use. Plastic wheels disintegrate on curbs. Cheap canopies don't shade. Spend $300+ for something that will still be a stroller in a year.
If the spec sheet says "29 inches wide," it won't fit through your door. Measure first.
Most NYC apartments have no foyer. You need a plan: under a console table, behind the door, in a corner. Strollers that fold flat (like the YOYO) tuck behind doors. Bulkier folds become permanent furniture in the entryway.

Get the right tool for your specific terrain. The YOYO is the best general-purpose city stroller. If your city is mostly curbs and cracked pavement, the GT2's air-filled wheels earn their bulk.
