Best toddler holiday outfits

What actually photographs well, what itches, and the brands worth paying for when the photos matter.

TL;DR The best toddler holiday outfit is comfortable enough that they don't fight you putting it on, structured enough to photograph well, and washable. Janie and Jack, Hanna Andersson, Carter's, and Old Navy cover most holidays. Skip stiff polyester. Order one size up — toddlers fight tight collars and tight pants. Plan two outfit attempts in case one fails.

What actually makes a holiday outfit work

The Pinterest-perfect outfit usually fails in real life. The toddler arches their back at the collar. The tights itch. The shoes pinch. Three minutes after the photo, they want it off.

The outfit that works has:

  • Soft fabric. Cotton or cotton blends. Skip 100% polyester unless it's a soft brushed version.
  • No tight collar. Buttons or snaps, not pullover. Or a stretchy neckline.
  • Stretchy waistband on pants. Hidden elastic, not a rigid button-and-zipper.
  • Snap-button shoes or velcro. Not laces. Not loafers without socks.
  • Easy diaper or pull-up access. If still in diapers, skip rompers that have to come off completely.
  • Washable. The food is going to land on the front. Hand-wash-only is a no.

Christmas

Boys

Best picks:

  • Hanna Andersson Pajamas + dress shirt combo. Their Christmas pajamas are organic cotton, soft, and you can pair the bottoms with a holiday button-up shirt for "dressy but comfy."
  • Janie and Jack Christmas suit. Premium ($80-120). Photographs beautifully. Worth it for grandparent gifts that double as photo outfits.
  • Carter's "little gentleman" combo. $30-50. Suspenders + bow tie + dress pants combo. Cute, washable, half the price of Janie and Jack.
  • Old Navy plaid button-down + jeans. $30 total. Casual-photo-friendly.

Girls

  • Hanna Andersson Christmas dress. Cotton, knee-length, holiday print. Their classic peruvian-pima fabric breathes well.
  • Tea Collection holiday dresses. Premium pick, international prints, true-to-size.
  • RuffleButts party dress. $40-60. Tulle skirt option for the kid who loves a twirly skirt.
  • Carter's red velvet dress. $25-40. Budget winner. Velvet looks expensive in photos.

Easter

Boys

  • Janie and Jack pastel suit. Seersucker or light cotton. Easter is a warmer holiday so breathable is critical.
  • Carter's polo + chinos. Affordable, washable, dressy enough for church.
  • Old Navy linen button-down. Wrinkle-resistant linen blend.

Girls

  • Pink Chicken cotton dresses. Floral prints, comfortable, knee-length.
  • Hanna Andersson spring dress. Reliable across years.
  • Tea Collection pastel print dress. Worth the spend if you want the photos.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is more casual than Christmas — fall colors, harvest themes, comfort over dressy.

Boys

  • Plaid button-down + jeans or chinos. Look for soft-flannel options.
  • "Little gobbler" or harvest-themed t-shirt + jeans. Carter's and Old Navy run themed shirts every November.
  • Sweater + cords. Knit sweater in burnt orange or mustard.

Girls

  • Corduroy dress. Hanna Andersson, J. Crew Crewcuts. Photographs well in fall colors.
  • Plaid dress + tights. Cotton tights, not nylon. Nylon itches.
  • Long-sleeve maxi dress. Practical for the long meal-time, twirly enough to feel "dress."

The brands worth paying for

Premium tier ($60-120 per outfit)

  • Janie and Jack. Classic, durable, photographs beautifully. Best for the "annual photo card" outfit.
  • Tea Collection. International prints, true sizing, ethical sourcing.
  • Pink Chicken. Vintage-floral aesthetic, premium fabrics, hand-down quality.

Middle tier ($30-60 per outfit)

  • Hanna Andersson. Organic cotton, generous fit, longevity. Worth the price if you have multiple kids who can pass down.
  • RuffleButts. Party dresses and matching headbands.
  • Carter's "Best of" line. A step up from their regular line, decent for special occasions.

Budget tier ($15-30 per outfit)

  • Carter's regular line. Reliable, washable, fine for casual holidays.
  • Old Navy. Wait for their sales. Outfits land around $15-25.
  • Target Cat & Jack. Surprisingly durable for the price.
  • H&M. Trendier, less classic. Cheap fabrics but cute for one-time photo events.

Plan apparel budget

Sizing — the universal rule

Order one size up from the toddler's regular size for holiday outfits. Reasons:

  • Dressier clothes tend to be cut slimmer than everyday clothes.
  • Toddlers grow. The outfit you order in October for December photos might already be tight.
  • Tight clothes = arching back during photos.
  • Bigger sizes can hide the diaper bulge.

The exception: dresses with structured bodices (Janie and Jack, Tea Collection) tend to be true to size. Check the specific brand's sizing chart.

Photo-day strategy

Here is what saves the photo:

  • Try the outfit on three days before. Pinching shoes? Itchy collar? You have time to fix.
  • Plan two outfit attempts. If the first one melts down, you can switch.
  • Get them dressed last. Shoes go on at the door. Tights go on just before you leave the house.
  • Bring a backup top. Food and drinks happen.
  • Skip stiff shoes. Velcro sneakers in the photo are fine. Loafers without socks are torture.
  • Pack a sweater. Cold churches, drafty venues. Add a layer.

What to skip

  • Polyester satin dresses. Look beautiful, feel like sandpaper.
  • Stiff bow ties on elastic loops. Choking on the toddler's neck within minutes.
  • Tights with feet on them. Unless your kid loves them. Most toddlers fight the feet.
  • Lace-up shoes. Unless your toddler can self-undo, which they cannot.
  • Hats with chin straps. Unless wearing a chin strap is established. Otherwise, fight.
  • Holiday-themed onesies for ages 2+. Pull-on diapers don't fit through a snap onesie anymore.

The "matching siblings" question

Matching outfits photograph well but are a logistical nightmare with toddlers. Two factors that help:

  • Coordinating, not identical. Same color palette, different cut. Less risk of one kid hating their outfit.
  • Order all sizes from the same brand. Sizing across brands is too inconsistent for a clean match.
  • Hanna Andersson's matching pajama sets are the easiest "matching family" win. Wear in front of the tree.

What to keep for next year

Hand-me-downs play here. A well-made holiday outfit from Janie and Jack or Hanna Andersson passes through 3+ kids if washed properly. Mark the size on a sticky note, store in a labeled bin in the basement. Worth more than the original price across siblings.

Cheaper outfits (Old Navy, Carter's regular line) might do 1-2 wears max before fitting issues. Don't store these — donate after the holiday.
