How to hire a babysitter: pay + setup

Where to find a sitter, what to pay in 2026, the interview script, the trial run, and the paperwork that keeps everyone safe.

The rates in 2026 (what to actually pay)

Babysitter pay varies more by city than by experience. The 2026 averages we're seeing across major sources:

  • Major US metros (NYC, SF, LA, DC, Boston, Seattle, Chicago): $22-$30/hr for one child, $25-$35 for two, $30+ for three or infants under six months.
  • Mid-size metros (Austin, Denver, Portland, Raleigh, Nashville, Atlanta): $18-$25/hr for one, $22-$28 for two.
  • Smaller cities and rural: $14-$20/hr for one, $18-$22 for two.
  • Teen babysitter (high schooler, families they know): $14-$18/hr in most regions.
  • Experienced sitter (CPR/first-aid certified, ECE background): Add $4-$8/hr to the metro rate.

Holiday rates: most sitters charge 1.5x to 2x on New Year's Eve, Halloween, and major holidays. Plan ahead.

Minimum bookings: most experienced sitters require a three-hour minimum, sometimes four. If you only need ninety minutes, expect to pay for three hours.

Where to find sitters

Different sources produce different candidate pools. Use two at once.

  • Care.com / Sittercity: Largest pool. Pre-screened to varying degrees. Premium memberships let you message directly. Use both for two weeks, then cancel.
  • Neighborhood Facebook groups / NextDoor: Best for referrals from neighbors. The friend-of-a-friend hire is the highest-retention type.
  • Local college and grad school boards: Many universities have part-time work boards. ECE, nursing, child psychology programs are gold mines.
  • UrbanSitter / Bambino: Smaller pools, often higher quality. Good for occasional/date-night bookings.
  • Your daycare's teachers: Many daycare teachers babysit on the side. Ask, kindly. Standard discretion applies (these are her after-hours gigs, not on-the-clock referrals).
  • Word of mouth at the playground: Underrated. Other parents are happy to share sitter names if asked directly.

The interview script

The first conversation should be a phone or video call, fifteen minutes, before any in-person trial. Questions in this order:

  1. "Tell me about your experience with kids around my child's age." (Listening for specifics. "I sat for the Hendersons for two years" beats "I love kids.")
  2. "What does a typical evening look like for you with a baby/toddler this age?" (You're looking for routine awareness, not just play talk.)
  3. "How do you handle a baby who won't stop crying?" (The answer should include patience, basic check sequence — hungry, wet, tired, gas — and willingness to call us.)
  4. "Are you CPR/first-aid certified? When?" (Not a deal-breaker if not, but knowing is useful.)
  5. "What's your phone policy when you sit?" (Listening for "I keep it on but on silent, eyes on the kids" not "I'm available on Instagram while they nap.")
  6. "How would you handle a bedtime tantrum / a fall / a bottle refusal?" (Pick the scenarios most relevant to your kid's age.)
  7. "What are your rates and any minimum hours?" (Get this before the trial, not after.)
  8. "Can you give me two references — one parent who's used you for a child in this age range?" (Always two. Call both.)

The trial run

Always do a paid trial visit. Most experienced sitters expect this and charge their full rate.

  • Schedule for ninety minutes during a time you'd be home anyway. The first thirty minutes is you + sitter + baby together. Then you "run an errand" (sit on the porch or upstairs).
  • Pay full rate, regardless of length.
  • Watch for: tone of voice with baby, how they manage their phone, how they handle a fuss, how they tidy up before leaving.
  • Debrief at the door. "How did that go for you? Anything surprising?" gives you their honest read.
  • Check in with baby (and your monitor footage if you have one). Trust your gut.

Reference calls (don't skip these)

Skipping references is the single most common mistake in babysitter hiring. The script for the call:

  1. "How long did she sit for you?"
  2. "How old were your kids when she started?"
  3. "What did you most appreciate about her?"
  4. "Was there anything you'd want a future family to know — anything that took some adjusting?" (The "adjusting" framing surfaces gentle red flags that "any concerns?" doesn't.)
  5. "Would you hire her again?"

If a reference is suspiciously enthusiastic and short, ask a follow-up: "What's an example of a tough night and how she handled it?" Real references can answer this.

The paperwork that protects everyone

Even occasional sitters benefit from a one-page "household info" doc. The one-pager covers:

  • Your phone numbers + the other parent's + a backup family member.
  • Pediatrician name + after-hours line.
  • Allergies + any meds + emergency action plan if relevant (asthma, allergies).
  • Address (yes, even sitters who've been before — they may need to give it to a 911 operator).
  • Routine: feed times, bottle preparation, bedtime, comfort objects, soothing tricks.
  • House rules: phone use, food in the kitchen, screen time for older kids, what to do if they have to leave the house.

Keep this on a clipboard on the fridge. Update it once a quarter.

The legal and tax piece (yes, even occasional sitters)

For 2026, the IRS threshold is $2,800 per household helper per year. If you pay any single sitter more than that, they become a "household employee" and you owe nanny taxes (Social Security, Medicare, federal and state unemployment).

  • Most occasional date-night sitters won't cross this line.
  • A regular Friday-night sitter at $25/hr for four hours x fifty weeks = $5,000. Crosses the line.

Building a roster (not just one sitter)

The household with one sitter is one bad cold away from no date nights. Build a roster of three.

  • Primary sitter: Your top pick. Friday nights, regular slots.
  • Secondary sitter: A backup, ideally one notch younger or less experienced, for daytime or short windows.
  • Emergency sitter: A neighbor, a college student, a family friend. The one who picks up on Tuesday at 5 PM when something goes sideways.

All three should know each other exists. Pay them the same rate. Don't make your primary feel replaceable.

The first night home

The first time you leave baby with a non-family sitter is hard. The setup that makes it easier:

  • Plan the date close to home for the first time. A restaurant ten minutes away, not an hour.
  • Keep the date short. Two and a half hours, not five.
  • Check the monitor once. Not eight times. Trust the work you did up front.
  • Tip the first night. Twenty to forty bucks extra is a real investment in retention.
  • Debrief warmly at the door. "How was she for you? What did I miss?" beats interrogation.

The first night is the hardest. By the fifth booking, date night will start feeling normal again. That's the whole point.
