Pregnancy Week 32: What to Expect
Baby's development, your body's changes, common symptoms, what to eat, and what to do this week.
Baby's development at week 32
Baby practices breathing motions (in amniotic fluid). Most babies are head-down by now in preparation for birth, though some shift later. Baby has fingernails that may need clipping after birth. Baby's bones are hardening. Baby's hair is more visible. Baby's body is filling out with fat — important for temperature regulation after birth.
What's happening in your body
Your uterus is about 5 inches above the belly button. Cardiac output is at peak now. Possible "lightening" — baby drops lower in the pelvis, which can give you a bit more breathing room but more pelvic pressure. Possible carpal tunnel from fluid retention. Possible Braxton Hicks regularly.
Common symptoms at week 32
Pelvic pressure when baby drops. Possible carpal tunnel symptoms. Possible Braxton Hicks. Strong fetal movements. Possible swelling. Possible mild breathlessness. Sleep difficult. Possible vivid dreams. Mood shifts.
When to call your provider
Severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling especially in face/hands — preeclampsia warning. Painful regular contractions, bleeding, watery discharge, signs of preterm labor — call provider.
How to feel better this week
Discuss the birth plan with your provider. Talk about: epidural preferences, doula, who you want in the room, whether you want immediate skin-to-skin, delayed cord clamping, vitamin K and erythromycin for baby, breastfeeding intention, whether you want photos taken at the birth. Continue Kegels. Side sleeping. Walks (slower, shorter). Hydrate.
Nutrition focus for week 32
Continue iron, calcium, protein, fiber, healthy fats. Add foods rich in choline (eggs) — supports baby's brain development which is rapid. Limit salt if swelling is bad. Stay hydrated.
For your partner
Discuss the birth plan together. There is no "right" plan — only the one that fits your values and preferences.
This week's to-do
Discuss and write the birth plan.
Is this normal?
If baby is in a breech position (feet down) at this point, your provider may try external cephalic version (ECV) around weeks 36-37 to manually turn baby. ECV has about a 60% success rate.
