Baby's development at week 34

Baby's central nervous system matures. Baby's skin is pinker as fat fills in. Baby's lungs are nearly mature. Baby's eyes are fully functioning. Baby's hearing recognizes specific voices and sounds. Baby can suck a thumb, has clear sleep cycles, and may have a "favorite" position to sleep in. Baby's antibody transfer from you continues.

What's happening in your body

Your uterus is about 6 inches above the belly button. Stronger Braxton Hicks contractions. Possible mild diarrhea — the body sometimes starts clearing out in advance of labor. Sleep hard. Possible carpal tunnel. Possible swelling.

Common symptoms at week 34

Stronger Braxton Hicks. Possible mild diarrhea or loose stools. Possible heartburn. Possible mild swelling. Possible vivid dreams. Mood shifts as labor approaches. Strong fetal movements. Possible pelvic pressure.

When to call your provider

Decreased fetal movement after established pattern. Severe headache, vision changes, sudden severe swelling — preeclampsia warning. Painful regular contractions, bleeding, watery discharge.

How to feel better this week

Pre-register at the hospital. Confirm provider details. Pack/double-check hospital bag. Continue Kegels. Side sleeping. Walks (gentler). Hydrate. Apply lotion. Rest when needed. Practice deep breathing.

Nutrition focus for week 34

Continue all nutrients. Hydrate well — the body's "labor prep" can include some fluid shifts. Eat small frequent meals. Continue diverse plant foods.

For your partner

Pre-register at hospital together. Confirm route, parking, what entrance to use. Have a "labor starting" plan: who you call, who watches kids/pets.

Is this normal?

Diarrhea or loose stools in the last weeks is your body's way of clearing out before labor. It is uncomfortable but is normal. If it is severe or with fever/blood, call provider.
