Baby's development at week 37

Baby is "early term." Some babies are born this week and are fully fine. Baby has fully developed organs, mature lungs (most of the time), and clear sleep cycles. Baby is gaining 1/2 lb per week. Baby's brain continues developing.

What's happening in your body

Your uterus is at peak height. Possible "lightening" — baby drops. Strong Braxton Hicks. Possible diarrhea (body clearing out). Lower back pain. Sleep very short. Possible mild swelling. Possible mild dizziness.

Common symptoms at week 37

Strong Braxton Hicks. Possible diarrhea. Lower back pain. Pelvic pressure. Possible swelling. Possible mucus plug passing. Sleep difficult. Strong fetal movements. Mood shifts — anticipation, anxiety, sometimes mild depression.

When to call your provider

Regular painful contractions (every 5 minutes for an hour), watery discharge or gush, bleeding (not show), severe headache/vision changes — call provider.

How to feel better this week

Set up postpartum recovery — pads, peri bottle, witch hazel pads, sitz bath, comfortable clothes, ice packs for perineum, nipple cream if planning to breastfeed. Have these ready. Continue Kegels. Side sleeping. Hydration. Practice deep breathing.

Nutrition focus for week 37

Continue all nutrients. Hydrate. Eat dates (if you want — some evidence they help). Iron remains a focus.

For your partner

Help set up the postpartum recovery station: pads, peri bottle, comfortable clothes, ice packs, nipple cream. Be there.

Only ~5% of babies are born exactly on their due date. Most are within a 2-week window before or after. Trying to "predict" the day is mostly chance.
