What makes a good family matching set

The Christmas pajama photo is the modern holiday card. The pajamas that work for the photo and the actual night of wearing have these traits:

• Adult sizes plus kid sizes plus baby sizes. True family coverage. Some brands stop at age 14.
• Matching pattern, not "coordinating." If you're going matching, commit. Otherwise it looks like an accident.
• Soft, breathable fabric. Organic cotton or bamboo. Skip 100% polyester fleece — it's hot and pills.
• True-to-size or one-size-up guidance from the brand. Buying without knowing the fit is a gamble.
• In stock from October on. The best sets sell out by mid-November.
• Flame-retardant testing. CPSC requires tight-fitting or treated for kids' sleepwear. Look for the "tight-fitting" label.

The gold standard. Organic cotton, tight-fitting (CPSC compliant for kid sleepwear), available in baby through adult XL. Their classic stripe pattern returns every year so you can match with siblings born across years. Fabric softens with each wash and holds color well.

Catch: sells out by early November. Order by Halloween.

2. Little Sleepies — premium bamboo — $40-70 per set

Bamboo viscose is silkier and cooler than cotton. Long-lasting, hypoallergenic, butter-soft. Their family-matching collections drop in October. Good size range (baby through adult).

Catch: highest price, but the quality is real. Babies graduate out of their first set before it ever pills.

3. Old Navy — best value — $15-40 per set

The reliable budget pick. Cotton blends, decent prints, "all-family" coverage. Their patterns drop in mid-October. Sales hit during Black Friday. Photographs well; doesn't last as long as Hanna Andersson but you didn't pay Hanna prices either.

Catch: less consistent sizing year-over-year. Try on before final commit.

4. Burts Bees Baby — sensitive skin pick — $25-50 per set

Organic cotton, no chemical dyes, gentle on baby skin. Their family-matching range is smaller than Hanna Andersson but the fabric quality is comparable. Best for families with babies who have eczema or sensitive skin.

5. Carter's — budget winner — $12-30 per set

Cheapest of the matching options. Polyester-cotton blend. Holds up for the season but doesn't survive multiple years of washes. Great for one-Christmas commitment.

Catch: limited adult sizes. Often kid-only.

6. Pottery Barn Kids — premium gifting pick — $50-90 per set

Heavy flannel, classic patterns. Sized for sleeping in cold houses. Best for families in colder climates. Customization (initials, names) is the differentiator — gift-worthy if you're sending sets to relatives.

Catch: shipping deadlines are tight. Order by early November for embroidery.

Sizing — the universal advice

Tight-fitting kids' sleepwear is a CPSC standard, not a recommendation. The pajamas should be snug but not constricting. If you size up to "be comfortable," you've defeated the flame-retardancy by design.

How to order right:

• Kids: order their regular size, not a size up.
• Babies: order the size they'll be wearing on Christmas Day, not their current size. Babies grow fast.
• Adults: order true to your regular pajama size. Most brands run true-to-size in adult lines. Read reviews for specific brand quirks.
• Pet sizes (yes, some brands): measure the dog. Dachshund-vs-Lab matters more than weight.

When to order

The matching family sets sell out earlier than you think. Timeline by brand:

What we returned

Polyester fleece sets from Amazon. Cute on the photo, miserable to sleep in. Sweaty, hot, pilly after one wash. Sale-bin matching pajamas from Walmart — sizing was 2-3 sizes off across the family, looked like none of us were in the right outfit. Generic Amazon "family matching" sets where the kids' sizes were missing pieces — pants for one kid arrived but not the top.

Care that makes them last

• Wash inside out on cold to preserve the pattern.
• Skip the dryer for the first two washes — hang dry to set the dye.
• No bleach. Ever.
• Wash separately the first time — Christmas red bleeds onto white whites.
• Fold and store in a labeled bin immediately after Christmas. Pull out next year. Hand down to siblings.

The pet pajama question

Hanna Andersson, Old Navy, Pottery Barn Kids, and a few others make dog-matching pajamas. They sell out faster than human sizes. If you want them, order with the rest of your family pajamas.

For cats: there is no cat-pajama market for a reason. Skip.

Coordinating without matching

If full-matching is not your aesthetic, here is the coordinating approach:

• Pick a 2-3 color palette (red + cream + green).
• Each person picks a different pattern in those colors (stripes, plaid, solid).
• Buy from one brand for consistent fabric quality.
• Photo result looks intentional without being identical.

Pajama-as-Christmas-Eve-gift tradition

• You already have great pajamas and the kids will be happy in those.

The photo without matching pajamas is still the photo. The kids in front of the tree are the gift.
