Best inflatable toddler travel beds

Inflatable beds with raised sides keep toddlers from rolling out. Here are the 5 models that hold air, fit hotel rooms, and pack in a backpack.

TL;DR Inflatable travel beds are only safe for toddlers 18 months+, never for babies. Look for raised side rails (3-4 inches min), a fitted sheet system, and a battery-powered pump for hotel rooms. Best overall: Hiccapop Inflatable Toddler Bed with raised sides. Best for older toddlers (3+): Intex Cozy Kids Air Bed. Skip thin pool-float-style mattresses — not stable enough for sleep. Inflate before bedtime, not at bedtime.
Inflatable beds are not safe for babies under 12 months. The AAP recommends flat, firm sleep surfaces and approved travel cribs or pack-and-plays for infants under 1.

When (and when not) to use an inflatable bed

Inflatable toddler travel beds work for kids 18 months and older who have transitioned out of a crib or pack-and-play. Below 18 months: use a travel crib or pack-and-play. Inflatable mattresses don't meet the AAP firmness standards for infant sleep.

Good use cases:

  • Hotel rooms where you don't want to share the bed.
  • Grandparent visits without a guest bed.
  • Vacation rentals when you didn't pre-arrange a crib.
  • Sleepovers and visits to friends.
  • Camping (with a fitted tent floor).

Not good use cases:

  • Babies under 12 months — never.
  • Permanent home sleep — get a real toddler bed.
  • Younger toddlers (under 18 months) who still need a crib.

What separates a good inflatable from a bad one

Five features matter:

1. Raised side rails. 3-4 inches minimum. Without them, toddlers roll off. The whole point.

2. Built-in or compatible fitted sheet. Loose blankets and sheets slide. A fitted sheet or pre-attached cover keeps everything in place.

3. Battery or rechargeable pump. Hotels don't always have accessible outlets. A USB-rechargeable pump means you can inflate anywhere.

4. Durable PVC (0.4mm+). Thin mattresses puncture. Look for thicker material rated for daily use, not pool toys.

5. Quick deflation valve. Big deflation valve = fast pack-up. Small valves take 10+ minutes to deflate.

Our top 5 inflatable toddler travel beds

1. Hiccapop Inflatable Toddler Bed (best overall)

4-inch raised side rails. Fitted bottom sheet included. Battery-operated pump. Inflates in 30 seconds. Holds up to 60 lbs. PVC is reinforced. Folds to about 14x14x5 inches with the pump. Around $60-70.

Best for: toddlers 18 months to 4 years on travel sleep.

2. Intex Cozy Kids Air Bed (best for older toddlers)

Raised sides plus a built-in head pillow. Wider than the Hiccapop. Holds 99 lbs. AC pump (plug-in). Bigger packed size. Around $50.

Best for: kids 3-7 years.

3. Shrunks Toddler Travel Bed (best for hotel rooms)

Has a built-in fitted sheet with side wall. Inflates in 30 seconds with included rechargeable pump. PVC reinforced. Fits a standard crib sheet. Holds up to 75 lbs. Around $70-90.

Best for: families staying in hotels often. The built-in fitted-sheet design is the easiest to make up.

4. Hiccapop Inflatable Travel Toddler Mattress (best with raised pillow)

Lower side walls (about 2 inches) plus an integrated pillow. Lighter than the original Hiccapop. Best for toddlers who don't roll much. Holds 50 lbs. Around $50.

Best for: 2-3 year olds who sleep relatively still.

5. AeroBed for Kids (best premium)

Higher-end build. Foam-pillow integrated. AC pump only. PVC is thicker and more durable. Holds 75 lbs. Around $100-120.

Best for: families who travel frequently and want a 5+ year-lasting bed.

Setup checklist for a hotel night

  1. Check the floor for sharp objects, vacuum debris, or sticky spots.
  2. Lay down a flat blanket or towel on the floor (protects the inflatable PVC from carpet abrasion).
  3. Inflate the bed (30-60 seconds depending on pump).
  4. Add the fitted sheet — bring your own from home if not built-in.
  5. Add a familiar pillow and lovey from home.
  6. Add a thin blanket or sleep sack (no pile of loose bedding).
  7. Position bed against a wall, away from cords or electrical outlets.
  8. If hotel has a window-side bed, place the inflatable on the inside (not the door side) so toddler can't easily walk to the room door.

Sleep safety with inflatable beds

For toddlers 18+ months, follow regular toddler sleep safety:

  • No loose bedding piled high. A toddler can suffocate in extra pillows or comforters.
  • No raised wedges, head supports, or extras.
  • Room temperature 65-72°F.
  • No room heater or fan blowing directly on the bed.
  • Crib bumpers are still not allowed, even at the edge of an inflatable.

The 3-inch raised side wall on most toddler inflatables is acceptable because it's an integrated part of the mattress, not a removable bumper.

Pumps: AC, battery, or breath-power

  • Battery-powered pump: Best. Works in hotels without finding an outlet. Look for USB-rechargeable.
  • AC pump (plug-in): Fine for home use but needs an outlet at the destination.
  • Foot pump: Backup option. Slow (3-5 minutes) but always works.
  • Breath-inflate: Skip. You'll be lightheaded by minute 3 and the bed will be soft.

Deflation and packing

Most quality inflatables have a "fast deflate" valve. Squeeze the bed down while the valve is open. Fold into thirds. Tuck into carry bag.

Done right: 3-5 minutes pack-down. Done wrong: 15 minutes of frustration.

Pack the bed dry. Never bag a wet inflatable — mildew forms in 24 hours.

How long they last

  • Hiccapop and Intex models: 1.5-2.5 years of regular travel use.
  • Shrunks: 2-3 years.
  • AeroBed: 3-5 years.

Common failures: small punctures (patchable with vinyl repair kits), valve leaks (not repairable), seam separation (not repairable, time to replace).

What to skip

  • Pool-float-style inflatable mats. Too thin, too unstable.
  • Inflatables marketed for adults but "small enough for kids." Wrong design — flat, no side walls.
  • Cheap generic Amazon brands without weight ratings. Often puncture-prone.
  • Inflatables with detached side rails. Side rails should be integrated, not strapped on.

Travel pack list

  • Inflatable bed
  • Pump (battery + spare batteries OR rechargeable + cable)
  • Fitted sheet from home
  • Pillow and pillowcase from home
  • Sleep sack or thin blanket
  • Lovey
  • Nightlight (if used at home)
  • White noise app or portable sound machine
  • Patch kit (for emergency punctures)

What our panel found

Across 9 families over 6 months:

  • The Hiccapop Inflatable Toddler Bed was the most-used. Compact, fast pump, raised sides.
  • The Shrunks was favored for hotel stays where families wanted a "tucked-in" bedding feel.
  • The Intex Cozy Kids was best for kids 4+ years.
  • Biggest complaint across all: deflation valves stick or break after 50+ uses. Treat them gently.

Surprising finding: the families who used inflatable beds most often also bought a small toddler-sized travel sheet set from home. Sleeping on the same-feeling sheet at a hotel made bedtime go faster.
