Best travel cribs compared

7 travel cribs tested side by side. Real weight, setup time, mattress quality, and the trips each one fits.

TL;DR The Guava Lotus is the all-around winner — 13 lbs, 15-second setup, fits airline carry-on, and has CPSC-compliant safe sleep credentials. BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light wins on aesthetics and ease but costs more. The Lotus Smart Travel Crib (the newer version) is the upgrade if you want compatible accessories. Pack-n-plays work if you're driving and weight doesn't matter. Skip inflatable cribs and any travel "co-sleeper" that doesn't meet CPSC safe sleep standards.

What makes a great travel crib

A travel crib has to do three things well, and most do only one or two:

  • Safe sleep compliance. Firm flat mattress, mesh sides for ventilation, no gaps where baby could wedge, no soft padding.
  • Light enough to actually travel. If it's over 20 lbs, you'll leave it home after one trip.
  • Quick setup. A 5-minute setup with a fussy baby in your arms is a deal-breaker.

Secondary considerations:

  • Fits airline carry-on size (some do, most don't).
  • Mattress comfort (most travel cribs sacrifice this).
  • Footprint size in the room.
  • Maximum weight rating (most cap at 25-30 lbs).

1. Guava Lotus — best all-around

Weight: 13 lbs. Setup: 15 seconds. Carry style: Backpack. Mattress: Firm foam pad.

The Lotus is the default recommendation for most families. Setup is genuinely 15 seconds — pop the legs out, the canopy snaps into place. Folds back into a backpack that fits in an airline overhead bin.

Wins on:

  • Setup speed (the fastest in this list).
  • Travel weight.
  • Sidewall zipper — open the side to slide baby out without leaning over.
  • Fits in standard airline carry-on overhead bins (rare for travel cribs).
  • Mesh on all sides for ventilation.

Watch out for:

  • Mattress is thin (firm, not plush — meets safe sleep standards but baby may take a few nights to adjust).
  • Max weight 30 lbs / 35" tall — some 3-year-olds will outgrow.
  • Less stable than a pack-n-play if baby pulls up on the sides.

Best for: families flying with a baby 0-2 years.

2. BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light — prettiest, smoothest

Weight: 13 lbs. Setup: 30 seconds. Carry style: Bag with handles. Mattress: 1.6" foam pad.

The Scandinavian aesthetic. Slightly higher mattress than Lotus, slightly higher price. Slightly longer setup (30 seconds vs 15) but still very fast.

Wins on:

  • Mattress is thicker and more comfortable than Lotus.
  • Quieter setup (no clicks; everything folds smoothly).
  • Looks better in an Instagram photo (yes, this matters to some parents).
  • Fabric is more breathable than competitors.

Watch out for:

  • $100 more than Lotus.
  • No sidewall zipper — must lift baby in/out from the top.
  • Carry bag has handles, not backpack straps.

Best for: families willing to pay extra for slightly more comfortable mattress and aesthetics.

3. Lotus Smart Travel Crib — upgrade Lotus

Weight: 13 lbs. Setup: 15 seconds. Carry style: Backpack. Mattress: Firm foam pad with bassinet conversion.

Newer Lotus model with compatible accessories — a removable bassinet level for newborns, a sound machine that clips to the side, and improved fabric.

Wins on:

  • Bassinet attachment makes it usable from newborn.
  • All the Lotus benefits.
  • Improved mattress over the original Lotus.

Watch out for:

  • $70 more than original Lotus.
  • Bassinet level not safe-sleep certified for unattended sleep — supervised use only.

Best for: families starting with a newborn AND wanting one crib for years to come.

4. 4Moms Breeze Plus — easiest pack-n-play setup

Weight: 25 lbs. Setup: 15 seconds. Carry style: Wheel.

If you're driving and don't need to carry the crib far, the Breeze Plus is the fastest-setting traditional pack-n-play. One-handed push-down to fold, one-handed pull-up to set.

Wins on:

  • Setup speed without sacrificing pack-n-play stability.
  • Higher weight rating (35 lbs).
  • Removable bassinet level included.
  • Built-in changing pad attachment available.

Watch out for:

  • 25 lbs is heavy for travel.
  • Doesn't fit in an airline overhead.
  • Carry bag has wheels but limited handle for airports.

Best for: car trips, grandparents' houses, and the "park-n-play in the living room" use case.

5. Graco Pack 'n Play Quick Connect — best budget

Weight: 30 lbs. Setup: 2 minutes. Carry style: Tote.

The standard pack-n-play, refined. If you already own a basic pack-n-play, this isn't a needed upgrade. If you don't, it's the cheapest CPSC-compliant option that works for travel.

Wins on:

  • Price.
  • Wide availability (Target, Amazon, Walmart, grandparents' attic).
  • Bassinet level included for newborns.
  • Higher weight rating (30 lbs).

Watch out for:

  • Setup takes 2 minutes vs 15 seconds.
  • Heavy.
  • Bulky in luggage.
  • Some grandparents have super-old versions that may not meet current CPSC standards — check date stamps.

Best for: tight budget. Car-trip travelers. Backup-at-grandparents.

6. Nuna Sena Aire — premium pack-n-play

Weight: 28 lbs. Setup: 45 seconds. Carry style: Bag with shoulder strap.

If you want a pack-n-play that doesn't look like a pack-n-play. The Sena Aire has cleaner lines, breathable mesh, and a thicker mattress than competitors.

Wins on:

  • Aesthetics (looks like a real crib).
  • Mesh sides for visibility.
  • Includes a "wheel kit" for grandparent house portability.
  • Better mattress than the Graco.

Watch out for:

  • $300 — same as Lotus Smart but 15 lbs heavier.
  • Doesn't fit airline overhead.

Best for: families using it as a primary crib at a vacation home.

7. Phil&Teds Traveller — lightest, smallest

Weight: 6 lbs. Setup: 2 minutes. Carry style: Roll-up bag.

The lightest travel crib available. Packs down to the size of a yoga mat. Big tradeoff: setup is 2 minutes, mattress is very thin, and it doesn't have rigid sides.

Wins on:

  • Weight (6 lbs is dramatically less than alternatives).
  • Packs small — fits in a backpack with room for other gear.
  • Cleans easily.

Watch out for:

  • 2-minute setup.
  • Thin mattress — many babies don't sleep great in it.
  • Side walls are flexible — older babies who pull up may make it shift.
  • Maximum weight 33 lbs / 31" tall.

Best for: minimalist travelers and backpacking trips where weight is the dominant constraint.

Travel cribs to avoid

  • Inflatable cribs. Don't meet CPSC safe-sleep standards. The bouncy surface fails the "firm flat sleep surface" requirement.
  • Travel co-sleepers. Bedside sleepers like the SnuggleMe, DockATot, or any "co-sleeper bassinet" sold for in-bed use are NOT safe-sleep approved. Multiple have been recalled.
  • Travel bassinets without firm flat mattress. A "moses basket" type bassinet for travel that doesn't include a firm flat sleep surface is unsafe for overnight sleep.
  • Crib tents. Recalled multiple times due to entrapment hazards. Don't add a tent to a regular travel crib.

Sheets and accessories

Most travel cribs use proprietary sheet sizes. Buy 2 sheets for the model — one for the crib, one in the wash. Generic pack-n-play sheets fit Graco/4Moms but not Lotus or BabyBjorn.

Don't add: blankets, pillows, bumper pads, sleep positioners. Safe sleep is firm flat mattress with fitted sheet only.

Do add (optional): a sound machine clipped to the side, a portable blackout cover for windows.

How to pick

  • Flying with one baby: Guava Lotus or Lotus Smart.
  • Premium with style focus: BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light.
  • Mostly car trips: 4Moms Breeze Plus.
  • Budget, occasional use: Graco Pack 'n Play Quick Connect.
  • Backpacking or minimalist: Phil&Teds Traveller.
  • Vacation home / extended stays: Nuna Sena Aire.

One last note on safe sleep

Wherever you travel, the AAP safe sleep rules apply. Baby sleeps on back, on a firm flat surface, nothing soft in the sleep space, room temperature 68-72°F. Travel doesn't change the physics of safe sleep. A travel crib is the safest non-home option; an adult bed, a couch, or a beach chair are not.
