Pregnancy Week 11: What to Expect
Baby's development, your body's changes, common symptoms, what to eat, and what to do this week.
Baby's development at week 11
Baby's external genitalia are forming and may be distinguishable on ultrasound by next week or so. Fingernails are forming. Baby can swallow amniotic fluid. The intestines are moving from the umbilical cord into baby's abdomen, where they belong. The diaphragm is forming. Baby's head still makes up about half of total body length, but limbs are catching up. Baby's heart, brain, kidneys, and liver are all functioning in primitive but increasingly sophisticated ways.
What's happening in your body
Your uterus is now about the size of a softball and is starting to rise out of the pelvis, which is why some people begin to look just slightly thicker around the waist (more often described as bloated than bumpy). Hormonal levels are still high but starting to plateau in some. Many people notice morning sickness easing — for those who have it ease, it usually happens between weeks 11-14. Breast changes continue, with possible visible Montgomery glands (small bumps on areola).
Common symptoms at week 11
Morning sickness easing for some. Heartburn. Constipation. Possible bloating. Mood swings. Hair feeling thicker. Vivid dreams. Slight breathlessness with activity (early hormonal shift, not a problem). Possible mild dizziness. Pregnancy "brain" starting — forgetfulness, scattered focus. Real and hormonal.
When to call your provider
Vision changes, severe headache (especially with no relief from rest), or visible swelling in face/hands — preeclampsia is rare before week 20, but worth checking. Heavy bleeding or persistent severe abdominal pain — call provider.
How to feel better this week
First-trimester combined screening (nuchal translucency ultrasound + bloodwork) is typically scheduled between weeks 11-14 — talk to your provider if you want this in addition to or instead of NIPT. Stay hydrated. Add daily walks if you have not been exercising; pregnancy is not a reason to stop moving. Sleep on your side. Use a body pillow if you find lying flat uncomfortable.
Nutrition focus for week 11
Continue prenatal vitamin. Add foods rich in choline (eggs, salmon, peanuts) — choline is critical for brain and spinal cord development and most prenatal vitamins do not have enough. Aim for 450 mg choline daily during pregnancy. Iron and calcium continue to matter.
For your partner
Schedule the NT scan together if you are doing one. Some find seeing baby on ultrasound makes the pregnancy feel real for the first time. Bring snacks; appointments can run long.
This week's to-do
Schedule the NT scan if doing it. Keep moving daily.
Is this normal?
Pregnancy brain (forgetfulness, scattered focus, losing your train of thought) is real and is partly hormonal, partly sleep-related. It improves after delivery, though many parents joke it never fully goes away — partly because attention is just permanently divided after a baby.
