Pregnancy Week 12: What to Expect

Baby's development, your body's changes, common symptoms, what to eat, and what to do this week.

Baby's size this week: Plum or large lime (~5.4 cm)

Baby's development at week 12

Baby's reflexes are developing. Baby can suck a thumb (or umbilical cord), swallow amniotic fluid, and make small movements you cannot feel yet. Vocal cords are forming. Intestines have moved fully into the abdomen. Bone marrow starts producing white blood cells. Kidneys produce urine that is released into the amniotic fluid (and baby swallows the amniotic fluid — practice for digestion). Baby's brain is rapidly developing; about 250,000 new neurons form every minute.

What's happening in your body

This is often the energy-return week. The placenta is taking over hormone production from the ovaries, which means the hormonal cocktail levels out a bit and nausea typically eases. Your uterus has just risen above the pelvic bone, which is why some people start to look bumpy this week (especially second-or-later pregnancies). Blood volume is up about 25% from pre-pregnancy. The thyroid gland is working harder; if you have thyroid issues, your dose may need adjustment now.

Common symptoms at week 12

Nausea fading for most. Energy returning. Mild bump may show, especially in second or later pregnancies. Vaginal discharge continues. Possible mild headaches (more blood volume). Breasts still tender and may be a full cup size larger. Cravings or aversions still strong for some.

When to call your provider

Persistent severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, or signs of preeclampsia (very rare this early) — call provider. After week 12, the risk of miscarriage drops to about 1-2%, but bleeding or severe cramping always warrants a call.

How to feel better this week

This is the typical week for the first-trimester combined screening (nuchal translucency scan + maternal blood test). It looks for chromosomal conditions and screens for some heart defects. Many people share their pregnancy news after week 12 because the risk of loss drops significantly. Switch to maternity-friendly underwear if regular ones are tight; consider a soft sleep bra for night.

Nutrition focus for week 12

Iron needs are climbing — pair iron-rich foods (lean beef, beans, spinach, fortified cereals) with vitamin C (orange, bell pepper, strawberry) for better absorption. Avoid drinking coffee or tea with iron-rich meals (the tannins block iron absorption). Aim for 27 mg iron daily; your prenatal should cover most of it.

For your partner

Many people share the news around now. Discuss together how, when, and with whom. Some people prefer to tell parents in person; others do a group text. There is no wrong way.

This week's to-do

Schedule the NT scan or combined screening. Update friends/family if you are ready.

Is this normal?

Reaching week 12 is a meaningful milestone. Most miscarriages happen before this point. It is completely OK to exhale a little this week.
